Superman and Captain America through the slums of Rimac
During Easter weekend half of our team was able to support a Dutch missionary couple who are serving in Rimac, one of the biggest slums in Lima. They had already organized a children's week during the summer and now wanted to hold a large evangelistic campaign during Easter. And how do you get kids and teens excited? With Superheroes of course!!!
On Saturday Berre and Max dressed up as superheroes and went out to the streets of the Rimac slums along with great music and others from the team and local church to attract children the the afternoon children's program. It was awesome! People stopped to watch, kids were so excited to see them and it was a great success since more than 40 children turned up for the activity.
We will change!
Street evangelism at Rimac |
In addition to working with children , we also worked with the youth of Rimac. Almost all of these young people come from a broken family who are Christian so being a Christian is a difficult step for them to take. The name of their youth group is "we will change " these teens really have a heart for God and they want to change radically for God ! For us it was inspiring to work with the youth, children and parents but it was really inspiring for them as well to see us.
Before each activity, we went to the streets with music and flyers to invite people to join the activities. On Good Friday we went out to the streets to do dramas and evangelize the youth group also joined us and took part in the program. For the teens, this was a special experience because they have not done this before in their own neighborhood. It's hard explain how this weekend was in words, but we really feel like God used us to encourge the church in Rimac and we were really touched to see how these teenagers who have faced such difficult lives have a deep longing for God and really want to go after Him.
Good Friday or "Vamos a ver la pelicula de Jesus at Brazos Abiertos!"
At Brazos with Jordi |
The other half of the team who remained at Brazos Abiertos continued to work on the new building project, which we were able to close partly. That made it possible to use the site as an improvised cinema for the Jesus movie that the Brazos Abiertos team had planned to show in the evening. We went out to the vast slum area to invite the people living there. Jordi made us use our little spanish skills to go to the people ourselves. Though almost none came on time (some suprisingly early for peruvian standards, the rest the expected 29 mins too late) in the end we had to carry up all the chairs available and even those were not enough to give everybody a place to sit. So it was truly an enjoyable task to support the Brazos Team through prayer, preparing snacks and hot chocolate for afterwards. We particularly found the people's reactions to be encouraging as they asked questions about the movie and other programes that happen at Brazos.
"Jesus es [resurrected]''
Liesbeth working of the new building with one of the cute kids |
We helped shape the service through dance, a self-written play (to display the court situation we all face in life) and Liesbeth's testimony, which seemed to fit the whole service perfectly.
Following that it was time to say farewell. After three weeks of living along with the staff and all the others this was none too easy. All were so thankful what once again confirmed that us being there meant more to them than we could see or understand.
Looking back at Lima
Children, many toilet runs due to diarrhea and sickness, dust and long days sum up the first three weeks of our outreach. But that would not reflect the full truth, because we have really experienced that God used us during these weeks and we can see His faithfulness.
We have shown God's love in Lima by giving sermons, worship, playing with kids games and football, building, give lots of hugs and just being there. For us these first three weeks in Lima are the beginning of God's wonderful work in Peru , it is a great honor to be here and serve Him.
