Clowns evangelizing the largest market in South America and Teambuilding in Lake Titicaca!

Every Thursday and Sunday will find the largest market in South America in El Alto, La Paz. Everything is available here, from clothing to food to cleaning supplies to cookware. And is it ever crowded; full of people, stalls and cars. 

It was to this market we decided to go on a Sunday afternoon and do street evangelism. But not just street evangelism, Berre, Brenda and Liesbeth were fully dressed as clowns on the streets. This was a wonderful way to attract attention, they were then able to do a skit called "The Sin Chair" which is about how we can get stuck to sin. Next Marjan and Stephanie shared about what sin is and about how God can free us from it.  

And if you thought this was all...after the  clowning acts followed an up beat flash mob to the song Alive (Hillsong) in Spanish, which has a message about us being alive in God. Following with a testimony of Tim about how God can change our lives. We could pray for people right on the street and share about who God really is. It is exciting to share about God in this way in the largest market in South America.

Closure of three special weeks in La Paz

 

This was our last week in El Alto, La Paz. In one of the poorest neighborhoods of La Paz, we have given joy, celebrated life, brought encouragement and shown more of who God is. The girls, guys and couples at the homes shared with us that it is sometimes very difficult to continue with the rehab program. Sometimes it's much easier to go back to the old and familiar life they have lived in for years. For us, it is sometimes hard to understand what hardships these youth and young adults have had to endure.

During the street evangelism and evenings with the girls, boys and couples we have shown that there is another life in Chirst. We know and believe that God has shown Himself through us, and that is the key to us being here! This week we really celebrated the life and joy that God can bring!

The beautiful way from Bolivia to Peru

Team building in Lake Titicaca!

On Thursday we crossed the border back to Peru, to the city of Puno for a four days of teambuilding. We took a few days to recharge, rebuild our team and encourge each other.
Do you know that game called White Elephant, where you exchange gifts with each other. Well that was one of our team building activities, we all had to give up one of our belongings. Some were really humble and gave up a newly bought Peruvian sweater while others just gave up their used nose spray, carrot, tampons and half eaten chocolate bars. We had a fun time, laughing at each other's gifts and just spending some well needed time as a group.

Preparing lunch was another challenging teambuilding activity. We were divided into groups of three and four, each team was given 5 Euros and fifteen minutes to prepare lunch for the team. The winning team being the one with the nicest presentation, food and fastest time. The Peruvians must have thought we were crazy, because we were all running around the streets getting food and disscussing prices trying to be as fast as possible. The tiny kitchen in the hostel was one big mess, with eleven people trying to find the most creative way to prepare and present lunch. It was awesome and delicious!

 We spent one day playing tourist taking a tour of Lake Titicaca, saw the floating islands and the beautiful nature of the area. It was refreshing to have a couple days of as a team and spend time together.

Clowns evangeliseren op de grootste markt van Zuid Amerika en Teambuilding in Lake Titicaka

El Alto, La Paz. Elke donderdag en zondag vindt hier de grootste markt van heel Zuid Amerika plaats. Alles is hier te vinden, van kleding tot eten tot schoonmaakspullen tot kookgerei. En het is er druk, vol met mensen, kraampjes en auto’s.

Het was deze markt waar wij besloten op zondagmiddag straatevangelisatie te doen. Maar niet zomaar straatevangelisatie, Berre, Brenda en Liesbeth gingen geheel verkleed als clown de straat op om a la publiek een sketch te doen over hoe je als mens vast kan zitten aan de zonde. Daaraan volgend pakte Marjan en Stephanie de microfoon om een preaching te geven over wat God hierin voor ons betekend.

En als u dacht dat dit alles was.. na de clowningact volgde een nieuwe beat van de muziek en hebben we een flashmob gedaan en gedanst op het nummer Alive (Hillsong) waarin het leven in God wordt bezongen. Afsluitend met een getuigenis van Tim over hoe God onze levens kan veranderen. We hebben gebeden met mensen op de straat en we hebben zeker aan honderden mensen de goede boodschap over het leven met God mogen vertellen.

Het geeft een kik om God op deze manier op de grootste markt van Zuid Amerika te laten zien en te evangeliseren!

Afsluiting van drie bijzondere weken in La Paz

Dit was onze laatste week in El Alto, La Paz. In één van de armste wijken van La Paz hebben we vreugde gegeven, het leven gevierd en God mogen laten zien. De meiden, jongens en koppels in het tehuis geven aan dat het soms moeilijk is om door te zetten. Soms is het zoveel makkelijker weer terug te gaan naar het oude en bekende leven dat ze hebben geleefd.

Voor ons is het soms nauwelijks te bevatten welke ellende deze jongeren en jongvolwassenen  hebben moeten doorstaan.

Tijdens de straatevangelisatie en de avonden met de meiden, jongens en koppels hebben we de mensen een blijk mogen geven van een ander leven. En we weten en geloven dat God Zichzelf door ons heen heeft laten zien en daar draait het om! Deze weken hebben we echt het leven gevierd en de vreugde mogen brengen waar God van tevoren al over gesproken heeft!

Team building in Lake Titicaca!

 

Op donderdag zijn we weer terug gegaan over de grens naar Peru, naar de stad Puno waar we vier dagen van teambuilding hadden. We hebben een paar dagen op het programma staan om weer op te laden, ons team op te bouwen en elkaar te bemoedigen.

Ken je dat spel waarbij je een klein cadeautje koopt en deze dan verruilt, afpakt of moet weggeven. Nou, dat was één van onze teambuilding activiteiten. De opdracht was om allemaal iets van onze spullen te gebruiken voor het spel. Sommigen waren erg nederig en gaven hun nieuw gekochte Peruaanse trui op, terwijl anderen nog meer nederig hun gebruikte neusspray, wortel, tampons of half opgegeten chocoladereep als cadeautje weggaven. We hadden een gezellige tijd samen, lachend om elkaars cadeautjes en gewoon het samen tijd doorbrengen die we als groep nodig hadden.

Het maken van lunch was een andere uitdagende activiteit tijdens onze teambuilding. We werden verdeeld in groepen van drie en vier. Elk team had  5 euro en kreeg 15 minuten om de lunch voor het team voor te bereiden. Het winnende team was degene die de beste presentatie had en als snelste weer terug was. De Peruaanse mensen moeten wel gedacht hebben dat we gek waren; rennend over de hele markt, verschillende ingrediënten kopen, discussiëren over de prijs en zo snel mogelijk weer terug zijn. De kleine keuken in het hostel was één grote chaotische plek met elf mensen die proberen de meest creatieve manier te vinden om hun lunch te presenteren. Maar, het was awesome en heerlijk!

 Daarnaast hebben we één dag de toerist uitgehangen op het Lake Titicaca. We zagen de floating island en de prachtige natuur van de omgeving. Het was heerlijk om zo een paar dagen als team vrij te hebben!

Hamburgers, plates full of cookies and a romantic evening in La Paz

 When we began preparing for our outreach we searched God what our focus should be on this trip. God spoke clearly: bringing joy and celebrate life! As we worked in the poorest part of La Paz we celebrated the life and joy that God wants to bring into this neighborhood.

Friday afternoon around three o'clock everyone was ready. The recipes were translated into Spanish, the young women divided into teams of one of our team and one or two of them, a good deal of enthusiasm and anticipation made ​​for a great afternoon of baking and a girls night at the young women's home! Pancakes, cheesecake, brownies, muffins, pizza and cookies were all on the menu! We did not only enjoy the delicious food but it was really special to make these things with the girls as many of them have never had a chance to learn how to bake from family. It was all about team work, having fun together and of course at the end enjoying it all.
  

In the evening everything was set up beautifully for the girls night, we enjoyed all the great food together and the girls were so excited to be able to try it all out. It was an emotional night, the girls each gave a little speech of what our visit meant to them. They talked about how we gave them new hope for a different life, encouragement to change and a lot of the visible love of God. At the end of the evening one of our team, Cindy, gave her testimony and a little preaching about our identity in Christ. We could really see that this touched the girls and encouraged them even further we then were able to pray for each girls and staff member. It was a really special time. We also made notes of encouragement to each other, were each girl could write and encouragement to one another. This evening with the girls is a night we will not forget and we are also sure the girls will not soon forget it. They have won a place in our hearts.

Celebrate life, celebrate love! In the couples house there is at the moment four couples, one with a baby and three couples of which the woman is pregnant. We wanted to bless them and thought of making for them a special at home date night! You must imagine that these couples have been living for a long time using hard drugs and most of them living under harsh conditions on the street. But this evening the couples had something magical. They were all given suits and beautiful dresses to wear. We did their makeup and hair in a beautiful up do. They were all so beautiful!

The cold dinning room had turned into a romantic restaurant like setting with a different table for each couple. With ccandlelight, roses and romantic music playing during the three course dinner which we prepared for them. We told them to just enjoy this evening with each other and have a good time. At the end of the evening, each one wrote to his loved one a love letter, we could really see them putting all their love into these letters. Celebrate life, celebrate love, this evening it was all there! Several couples said they have never had a more romantic night in their life, they had never had a chance to go out like this together. For them as they later tolds us this evening was a night to remember and a special time to relight the spark of love for each other.

The guys in our team had a hamburger party for the guys home. The guys made homemade burgers with all the topping together! They then really enjoyed eating together with the guys and playing some games together. They had a crazy good time together just bringing some life into the house. Later on Max gave his testimony which really inspired the guys. He encouraged them to keep going and not give up on their situation. The whole evening was an encouragement for the guys, cooking together, fun games and talking about God are things that encourage them to keep going!

 We can definitely say we had a very successful week!

Toen we begonnen met de voorbereidingen voor onze outreach hebben we tot God gebeden wat onze focus mag zijn tijdens deze reis. God sprak duidelijk: het brengen van vreugde en het leven vieren! We werken in het armste gedeelte van La Paz en deze week hebben we in deze buurt het leven mogen vieren en Gods vreugde mogen brengen!

Vrijdagmiddag rond een uur of drie was iedereen er klaar voor. De recepten waren vertaald in het Spaans en Engels, de boodschappen uitgestald over de keuken en de woonkamer en een goede portie enthousiasme en voorpret maakte de gehele voorbereiding af: een hele middag bakken om ’s avonds te genieten van een uitgebreide High Tea met de meiden in het meiden tehuis!

Pannenkoeken, monchoutaart, brownies, muffins, pizza en koekjes in alle mogelijke smaken, wat hebben we genoten! Niet alleen van het heerlijke eten, maar vooral om samen met de meiden dit alles voor te bereiden en de kale woonkamer in te richten tot een sfeervol restaurant. Het was teamwork, het was samen lol hebben, het was op en top genieten.

’s Avonds rond een uur of 7 was alles gereed en hebben we met lof voor ieders werk, van alle heerlijkheden kunnen genieten!

Het was ook een emotionele avond. De meiden hebben één voor één gesproken over wat ons bezoek voor hen heeft betekend. Nieuwe hoop op een ander leven, bemoediging om te veranderen en heel veel zichtbare liefde van God. Cindy gaf haar getuigenis en een kleine preaching over identiteit. Dit heeft de meiden echt aangeraakt, het was een moment waarop ze zichzelf konden zien zoals God ze zag. Daarna hebben we op briefjes bemoedigingen voor elkaar geschreven en voor elkaar gebeden, inclusief de staf. Deze avond met de meiden is een avond die we niet snel zullen vergeten, de meiden niet en wij niet. Ze hebben een plekje in ons hart gewonnen.

Vier het leven, vier de liefde! In het koppelshuis verblijven op dit moment drie koppels, waarvan één met een kindje en twee koppels waarvan het meisje zwanger is. We wilden graag iets voor hun betekenen en hebben daarom een ‘avondje uit thuis’ gegeven. U moet u voorstellen dat deze mensen vaak lange tijd op de straat hebben geleefd, onder harde omstandigheden. Maar deze avond met de koppels had iets magisch. Alle mannen kwamen in pak, hun vrouw in een prachtige jurk met make up op en hun haren in een prachtig gala kapsel. Ze waren zo mooi!

De kille eetkamer hadden we veranderd in een romantisch mini restaurantje met elk een tafel voor zich. Kaarslicht en romantische muziek ontbrak niet tijdens het drie gangen dinner wat we voor ze hebben klaar gemaakt. Het zien van al deze gelukkige en verliefde gezichten was het meer dan de moeite waard. Aan het eind van de avond heeft elk koppel al zijn liefde en creativiteit gestopt in het schrijven van een liefdesbrief voor zijn of haar vriend of vriendin. Vier het leven, vier het liefde, deze avond was het er allemaal! Meerdere koppels hebben waarschijnlijk nog nooit eerder op zo’n manier een avond samen doorgebracht, door hun leven op de straat. Voor hen was deze avond dan ook een avond om nooit te vergeten en een bijzondere investering en opleving van de liefde voor elkaar.

Samen spellen spelen met veel actie

In het jongenshuis hebben alle mannen van ons team de jongens voorzien van een hamburgerparty. Met tassen vol ingrediënten konden de jongens zelf hun eigen hamburgers maken, wat ze veel plezier gaf. Naast het maken van de hamburgers gaf Max zijn getuigenis wat de jongens erg heeft geïnspireerd. Het is goed om niet alleen serieus te zijn, maar ook lol te maken. En daardoor kwamen er ook een aantal spellen deze avond aan te pas. De hele avond was een bemoediging voor de jongens, het samen koken, de lol en het praten over God zijn dingen die ze aanmoedigen om door te gaan!

We kunnen echt zeggen dat het een succesvolle week was! 

Bringing Joy in the clouds of La Paz!

This is outreach! Last Wednesday we were supposed to leave for Bolivia but plans were changing every minute, one minute we were leaving the same evening, then we were leave on Thursday evening, a minute later we discovered it was not possible since the whole country was on national holiday, so finally it was decided that we would leave that same evening. We had just one hour to pack our stuff,  and catch our bus to Bolivia. And you know what, we made it!

New Adventure on the Bus!

Luckily the bus strip to La Paz was less of a rollercoaster ride than the bus trip from Lima to Cusco. But it was still a different adventure we found ourselves on.  Halfway through the trip we woke up, because there was a laptop stolen from a German turist. As a team we were already warned for situations like this, but seeing it so close, it makes you extra aware of the poverty and criminality. Luckily the guy found  the passenger who stole his laptop, but for us it was an eye opener about the third world country we were about to enter to.

After the long ride we arrived safely to Adulm Mission in El Alto, which is the upper city of La Paz. We are at the highest capital of the world, the area where we are at is about 4000 m above sea level. We are really sitting on the clouds trying to catch our breath. The altitude creates interesting affects like loss of breath, headaches, and unwelcomed farts. We are living in one of the houses of the mission which is really located in the poor area of La Paz.

Mission Adulm

The mission Adulm was founded by Fineke Jansen who is a Dutch missionary who moved her life to Bolivia 25 years ago. The mission is divided into three houses for boys, girls and couples between the age of 13 until 35 who previously lived on the streets and had problems with drug and alcohol addictions. The houses are a refuge were they can have therapy and go through a program which helps them enter back into society.

Last week we were separated into the houses and supported the staff were it was needed as well as just hung out with the people in the houses. We had lunch with them, joined them for creative therapy and sports as well as hung out with them. We can see that a relationship is starting to form between our team and them which is awesome. We can see that the teens and young adults at the houses have had a really hard life and we feel that we can bring some joy into the houses in the time we will be here.

This last week was a week we were really looking forward to because Jonathan our school leader came all the way from Holland to La Paz for a pastoral visit. We had an awesome time with him and all the mail he brought from home. You should have seen all the happy faces it was like Christmas. Since we are now half way through the outreach we are starting to miss home more and his visit brought a bit of home to La Paz. During the week we had encouraging talks with Jonathan and he inspired us to have big faith for the second half of our outreach. We were really encouraged as a team by his visit.   

Next Week!

This week we organized some special events for the different houses, such as dance lessons, couples gala evening, high tea with the girls and a hamburger party for the guys. We are really excited for these programs. Please pray this coming week that it goes well and that these programs will also have a deeper affect on the youth and young adults in the houses. Please also pray for our team as some people are sick and others are emotionally tired.
